Double Beers

Privacy Policy

What Double Beers stores, who can see it, and how to stop sharing it or have it deleted.

Last updated October 18, 2026 · applies to Double Beers 1.0 for iPhone, iPad and iPhone Duo

The short version

  • No ads, no analytics, no tracking, no third-party code, and no account to create. Nothing is sold.
  • The beer runs entirely on your device. Motion readings, settings and stats stay on it.
  • Refill a Friend is public. If you're signed in to iCloud, your glass goes into a public database that everyone using Double Beers can read. That includes your Game Center nickname (or “A Drinker”), beers finished, Karma and when your glass went empty. When it's empty, it shows on the feed for up to 24 hours.
  • You can keep your glass off the feed: in the app, go to Settings › Friends › Share My Empty Glass and turn it off.
  • To have your data deleted, email support@doublebeers.com.

1Who we are

Double Beers is a free app made by Mitch Chaiet (“we”, “us”). We're responsible for the data described here (the data controller). Questions go to support@doublebeers.com.

2What stays on your device

Most of Double Beers never leaves your iPhone or iPad:

  • Motion sensor readings. Used, as they arrive, to move the beer. They're never stored or sent anywhere.
  • Your settings and stats: beer style, head, fizz, feel, sounds, beers finished, Karma.
  • A random ID for your glass. It's kept in your device's keychain, so reinstalling the app finds the same glass again.
  • Your Game Center player ID. Kept on the device only, so Karma follows the right player.
  • Sounds. Generated on the device. The app never uses the microphone or the camera.

3Refill a Friend: the public database

Refill a Friend works through Apple's CloudKit public database, which Apple runs for us. It's used only while you're signed in to iCloud. If you're not signed in, nothing is sent and Refill a Friend stays off; the beer works the same either way.

While you're signed in to iCloud, the app keeps your glass record up to date from the moment it opens, whether or not you ever open the Refill a Friend screen. Share My Empty Glass (section 7) decides whether your glass can show on the feed as empty; it doesn't stop the record being written.

CloudKit also adds its own details to every record: when it was created and changed, and an identifier for the iCloud account that made it. That identifier is specific to Double Beers. It doesn't reveal your Apple Account email address or your name, to us or to anyone else.

Who can see it

  • Everyone using Double Beers can read these records. That's what makes the feed work. The app shows glasses that went empty in the last 24 hours, with the nickname, beers finished, Karma, how long the glass has been empty and the number of glasses. When someone refills your beer, you see their nickname.
  • We can see the records in Apple's CloudKit Console. We use them only to run Refill a Friend and to answer your requests.
  • Apple stores and serves them for us.

Because the database is public, don't put anything in your Game Center nickname that you wouldn't want strangers to see.

4Game Center

If you're signed in to Game Center, Double Beers does three things:

  • reads your nickname, to show on the feed;
  • posts your Karma and Beers Finished totals to two Game Center leaderboards, where other Game Center players can see them;
  • reads your own Karma score back, to restore it after a reinstall.

Game Center is run by Apple under Apple's Privacy Policy. We don't receive your Apple Account details.

5Notifications

The first time you open Refill a Friend, the app asks whether it may send notifications. If you allow them, Apple's CloudKit sends one when someone refills your beer (“🍺 Sam refilled your beer!”). Apple handles the delivery and your device's push token, and we never see either. We don't send marketing notifications. To turn them off, open the Settings app, then Notifications, then Double Beers.

6What we never do

  • Show ads, or include any advertising, analytics or crash-reporting SDK. The app contains no third-party code.
  • Track you across other companies' apps or websites, or use your data for advertising or marketing.
  • Sell your data, or share it with data brokers.
  • Access your location, contacts, photos, camera or microphone.
  • Ask for your real name, email address or phone number inside the app.

7Your choices

  • Share My Empty Glass (in the app, Settings › Friends). Off means your glass is never shown as empty, so it never appears on the feed and nobody can refill it.
    • Your glass record still exists, with your nickname, beers finished and Karma, but nobody is shown it.
    • You can still refill other people. Each refill you send carries your nickname.
  • Game Center. Sign out and you appear as “A Drinker”, and the app stops posting to leaderboards.
  • iCloud. Sign out of iCloud (or turn off iCloud for Double Beers, where the Settings app lists it) and the app stops reading and writing the public database. Records already there stay until they're deleted (see section 9).
  • Reset Stats (in the app, Settings › Stats). Sets beers finished back to zero, on your device and in your glass record. Game Center keeps your best Beers Finished score on its leaderboard.

8How long it's kept

  • On the feed: an empty glass appears at most 24 hours after it ran dry. It goes sooner if it's refilled or you pour a fresh one.
  • In the database: glass and refill records don't expire on their own. They stay until they're deleted: by us when you ask (section 9), or when we clear out old records, which we may do at any time. The app tries to remove refills once they've been delivered, but the database's permissions currently don't allow it.
  • Deleting the app doesn't delete your records. Reinstalling picks up the same glass.

9Deleting your data

Email support@doublebeers.com with your Game Center nickname, and roughly when you last used Refill a Friend. We'll delete your glass record and the refill records that carry your nickname, and confirm by email, within 30 days. We'll only ask for more if we can't find you otherwise.

If you keep using Double Beers while signed in to iCloud, the app makes a new record for your glass the next time it opens. To stop that, sign out of iCloud (or turn off iCloud for Double Beers, where the Settings app lists it). Turning off Share My Empty Glass on its own isn't enough: it keeps your glass off the feed, but the record is still written.

Everything kept on your device goes when you delete the app, apart from the keychain ID for your glass. You can clear your stats and settings at any time in the app's Settings.

10Children

Double Beers isn't meant for children. We don't knowingly collect data from children under 13, or under the minimum age where they live. If you think a child's nickname is on the feed, email support@doublebeers.com and we'll delete it.

11Where it's stored, and security

  • Where: Apple stores CloudKit data on its servers for us, and those servers may be outside your country.
  • Who can change a record: only the iCloud account that created it. Nobody else can change your glass. A refill is a separate record that the refill's sender creates.
  • Who can read it: everyone using Double Beers can read these records (see section 3).
  • In transit: data travels encrypted between the app and Apple's servers.

12Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask for a copy of your data, to correct or delete it, or to object to how it's used. This includes the GDPR in the EU and UK and the CCPA/CPRA in California.

  • How to ask: email us. We'll answer within 30 days.
  • Legal basis: we use this data only to run Refill a Friend and its leaderboards, a feature of the app you installed (our legitimate interest in providing it). It's on whenever you're signed in to iCloud. You can object at any time: turn off Share My Empty Glass to keep your glass off the feed, sign out of iCloud to stop the app writing to the database, or email us to have your records deleted.
  • Selling and sharing: we don't sell or “share” personal information as California law defines those terms.
  • Complaints: you can also complain to your local data protection authority.

13Changes

If what the app stores changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top before the new version ships, and mention it in the version's release notes.
